Legendary OG celebrates 15 years in the industry with a new mixtape – Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood
Legendary OG is not just a name, it’s a brand. With 15 years in the game, this artist has seen the South African hip-hop scene grow from its early roots to a force recognised worldwide. His latest project, Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood is more than a mixtape — it’s a movement, showcasing emerging talent while pushing South African hip-hop onto the global stage. We caught up with Legendary OG (Macebo Mdhluli) to dive deeper into his journey, his latest work, and what the future holds for both him and the genre.

The evolution of South African hip-hop
Reflecting on the past 15 years, Legendary OG recalls the shifts in the industry. “Hip-hop was introduced in the 1980s here in South Africa, and pioneers like Senyaka and Prophets of da City laid the foundation for what was to come,” he says. The early 2000s, a golden era, gave us legends like HHP, Prokid, and Skwatta Kamp, making hip-hop a mainstream force. But today, it’s the new school—Nasty C, the late AKA, Cassper Nyovest—that’s breaking international boundaries.
For OG, the growth has been profound, especially as hip-hop moves beyond music into fashion, art, and social activism. “Hip-hop isn’t just a genre, it’s a lifestyle, a way for us to tell our stories and reflect the realities of our society,” he adds.
The Birth of Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood
When asked about the inspiration behind Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood, OG is quick to point out that it’s about more than just him—it’s about community. “I wanted to give a platform to talented individuals, some of whom are close friends,” he shares. For OG, this mixtape represents a dream to introduce these emerging artists to a global audience. He emphasises that Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood isn’t just for South Africa; it’s a project that aims to take local hip-hop to the world.
Why create a space for emerging artists?
Legendary OG is a big believer in the power of new talent. “Showcasing emerging talent can nurture creativity, diversity, and innovation. I want to help these artists gain exposure, build confidence, and develop their careers,” he explains.
For OG, his motivation is simple: discovering and supporting new talent, fostering diversity, and contributing to the growth of the hip-hop ecosystem. “It’s about building a sense of community and connection among artists,” he says. And this sense of community is clear when listening to the project.
Curating a 23-track mixtape
Twenty-three tracks is no small feat. So, how did Legendary OG pull it off? “Artists submitted their music, and I selected the standout tracks. I was looking for originality, production quality, emotional impact, and how well the track fit with the mixtape’s overall vibe,” he reveals. OG’s taste played a key role in shaping the final product, making it a cohesive project that still allows each artist to shine.
What listeners should take away?
The message behind Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood is clear: it’s a reflection of societal life and everyday struggles. “Each artist brings their unique perspective, offering listeners insights that go beyond music. It’s about reflecting on the world around us,” OG says. He hopes listeners walk away feeling inspired and more connected to the realities that the artists rap about.
Taking South African hip-hop global
South African hip-hop is on the rise, but how does it get the global recognition it deserves? For Legendary OG, collaborations and digital platforms are key. “Collaborating with international artists, leveraging platforms like YouTube and Audiomack, and developing a unique sound that blends local styles with global trends—that’s how we take this music to the world,” he explains.
But it’s not just about the sound. “Sharing authentic South African stories through our lyrics is crucial. Our storytelling is what sets us apart from other hip-hop scenes around the world,” OG proudly states.
The role of Audiomack and YouTube
Platforms like Audiomack and YouTube are instrumental in expanding the reach of South African artists. OG believes they help increase visibility, connect with a global audience, and provide revenue streams. “But I still believe in grassroots distribution—sharing music directly with people on the streets. It’s how I connect personally with my local fanbase,” he says.
From hip-hop to wine
Legendary OG isn’t just making music—he’s building an empire. His wine brand, OG, launched in 2022, is a prime example of how he’s diversified his brand. “There’s a natural synergy between music and business,” he says. By launching OG Wine, he’s created a platform to cross-promote his music and products.
The challenges of balancing a music career with entrepreneurship are real, though. “Securing sponsorships and maintaining financial sustainability is tough,” he admits. But the rewards? Creative freedom and the ability to empower other artists. “I get to experiment, build my brand, and impact the cultural landscape,” he says.
The future of Legendary OG
So, what’s next for Legendary OG? More music, more mentoring, and a bigger, bolder Do-Uproductionz. “I want to be a game-changer in the industry, pushing boundaries and inspiring a new wave of creatives,” he says. His upcoming 13-part documentary series, centred on Grab Da Mic Rap Your Hood is just the beginning.
Looking ahead, OG envisions a thriving South African hip-hop scene where innovative storytelling continues to flourish. “I want to empower the youngest generation of hip-hop artists and make sure South African hip-hop is recognized globally,” he adds.
Advice to aspiring artists
“Never let anyone tell you, you can’t make it,” OG advises. Reflecting on his 15-year journey, he encourages aspiring hip-hop artists to stay focused, chase their dreams, and make the most of their time. “Take action and stay true to your goals,” he says.
