Picture a young prodigy from the streets of Soweto, mastering instruments, producing beats, and rocking stages—all while still in high school. That’s Jay Da MusiQ for you. Born Lesego Jonas Mataboge in 2006, this up-and-coming artist dreams of making waves in the Amapiano and Afro-tech scenes.

Jay Da MusiQ’s career took flight during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when he began producing music under Way Forward Production. His ability to experiment with different genres, including private and soulful amapiano, commercial, and afro-tech, quickly set him apart. At 19 years old, he has mastered multiple instruments, including the piano and guitar, proving that his passion for music goes beyond just DJing and production.

He officially stepped into the limelight with his debut EP, African Piano, released in October 2023. This was followed by a string of other projects including Uyajola (May 2024), Mbingano (August 2024), and African Ocean (October 2024). These releases, now available on all major digital platforms, showcase his evolution as an artist and his deep connection to Amapiano.

Collaborations with industry giants

He has already worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, collaborating with legends like Jakarumba (Trompies), JahSeed (Bongo Maffin), and Sbu Maloya, as well as international artists such as Uganda’s Mukabya Junior. Additionally, he has worked with emerging artists like Bade Lama Bade, Material Mathousand, and the dynamic duo Amajita, featuring talented artists under the age of 10.

He has graced stages at major events like the Youth Day Melody Clap and Tap After Party, Soweto Theatre’s Amapiano Evolution, Plugged Musical Concert, and various top clubs, including Disoufeng, Kwa Lichaba, and The Joint Lounge. His ability to captivate diverse audiences highlights his versatility as a performer.

His meteoric rise has not gone unnoticed. Jay has been featured on renowned radio stations such as Jozi FM, Ikwekwezi FM, Westside FM, and Thetha FM. His recognition extends beyond music, catching the attention of actor Ernest Msibi, famously known as Chester from Yizo Yizo. Jay was enlisted to produce soundtracks for Msibi’s comedy shows, further cementing his credibility in the entertainment space.

Additionally, his partnership with the esteemed Black Motion Production has positioned him as a respected figure in the industry, serving as a resident DJ and contributing to the Amapiano movement’s continued growth.

Jay’s latest masterpiece, Relebogile Mofokeng FBI, is a tribute to South African football player Relebogile Mofokeng. Featuring artists like Jebba Lezinto, Farmi Wama Inch, and Micky Nyc, the song celebrates the young athlete’s dedication to the sport, exemplifing Jay’s ability to blend storytelling with music, ensuring that his art remains impactful and memorable.

With his eyes set on international collaborations, Jay Da MusiQ dreams of working with Amapiano heavyweights Kelvin Momo and Morda Bongz, as well as global superstar Burna Boy. His vision is to create a musical legacy that transcends borders, inspiring future generations of artists and fans alike.
