S’BO GYRE turns the 9-to-5 exit fantasy into danceable Zulu pop-rap

South African rapper and performance artist S’BO GYRE released his new single, I QUIT (9.2.5), on 18 September 2026, turning the familiar fantasy of walking away from the 9-to-5 into an energetic mix of Zulu electronic pop and rap. Created as an exhale at the end of the working week, I QUIT (9.2.5) captures the feeling of shutting down the office laptop, abandoning the calendar invite and deciding that enough is enough.

S’BO brings that feeling to life through festival-scale synths, theatrical rap, robotic cadences and reimagined Zulu protest chants. The result moves between corporate frustration, Friday-night release and an invitation to dance through whatever comes next.

Produced alongside Yolophonik and Audio Addicts, the record turns workplace fatigue into something celebratory. There is also a personal story behind the concept. After years working professionally across PR, marketing, sport and entertainment, S’BO recently resigned from salaried employment to focus more on music, performance, writing and independent creative work.

He turned that decision into a song. “I loved my 9 to 5, but I had a deep seeded feeling that I was destined for even more. After years of pouring into others, I knew the time had come to give the same energy to myself. The song is the manifestation of courage actualized. It just happens to be a particularly universal feeling I think many of us so desperately want to honour,” says S’BO GYRE.

But I QUIT (9.2.5) is not only about leaving a job. The question behind the single is simple: what are you quitting? It could be a job, a relationship, a habit, someone else’s expectations or an old version of yourself. The track had already received an unofficial trial run through preview performances at Basha Uhuru, Trace Sessions and Back to the City, where it drew strong crowd responses. For S’BO, the single also represents another step in the development of his musical identity.

His work has moved from the queer rap declaration of QUEERNOMICS, through the genre-fluid experimentation of ALTAR CALL, to the disco-kwaito energy of Pele Pele. Rap has remained at the centre while the musical worlds surrounding it continue to expand. With I QUIT (9.2.5), that evolution moves towards electronic pop and large-scale performance, reflecting an artist whose work increasingly crosses music, theatre, fashion and storytelling.

“I was as shocked as anyone else that the song manifested into an electro-pop sonic direction. But I’ve never seen limitations to what Zulu Pop Rap could be. This is my latest foray in trailblazing in my lane. Innovation feels like a second nature to me at this point. And there’s plenty more where that came from,” says S’BO GYRE.

S’BO was named among the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans in 2025 and has appeared in the documentary Young, Gifted & Queer. He also co-wrote and performed in Nkoli: Fierce & Fabulous. His performance history includes appearances at Back to the City, Basha Uhuru, Boiler Room and Jägermeister Night Embassy, alongside international performance work.

For now, the artist is keeping what comes after the resignation under wraps. There may be meetings. There may be exit interviews. There may even be a severance package. But the resignation has already been submitted.

I QUIT (9.2.5) by S’BO GYRE is available on all major streaming platforms. The question now is: what are you quitting?
