Big win for SA hip hop – AKA, K.O lead SAMA nominations

Late rapper AKA.

Though not much anticipation for the South African Music Awards (SAMAS) the nominations for this year’s edition has been announced.

With the late rapper AKA and K.O leading the pack.

AKA leads with seven nominations, while K.O isn’t far behind with six.

The announcement was made on October 3 in Soweto.

Scheduled for the 17th and 18th of November, the awards will return to KwaZulu-Natal after an eight-year hiatus, thanks to a partnership between the SAMAs and the province’s Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs.

Refilwe Ramogase of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) revealed their concerted efforts to rectify the issues that marred the previous Samas show.

It’s worth noting that last year’s awards show faced criticism from industry heavyweights due to poor attendance and alleged subpar planning and execution.

Subsequently, RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi suspended the SAMA project management team and initiated an internal disciplinary process for perceived breaches of SAMA rules.

K.O is nominated in six categories for the SAMAs.
