DJ Blaqice (Dumisani Nkosi) will be dropping his latest mid-tempo mix, Cognac and Cigars Volume 2 on December 15 in collaboration with Sam Galela (Sam G).

The KwaThema DJ’s love affair with music began during the heydays of the is’bhujwa scene in 2007/8. Originally a dancer, he transitioned into DJ’ing in 2008 using his aunt, Sibongile’s computer. His debut as a DJ came when he was booked for his neighbour’s 16th birthday.

“Aunt Sibongile played a huge role in my music career. She believed in me and would plug me with new music, she even bought me headphones and she permitted me to use her laptop to deejay when I got Gigs.”

In 2013 he secured a residency gig at Barlounge in KwaThema, an opportunity that paved the way for collaborations with Rune Thulane Sibiya at Addikted to Africa (A2A) in Tsakane. These experiences propelled him to new heights, allowing him to compete in prestigious events like the Redsquare DJ Competition and Platinum DJ hosted by Kasi FM.

“Competing in events and competitions has been exciting. I have travelled a lot and played for big crowds. These experiences have given me so much confidence and a chance to polish my DJ’ing career,” he said. Networking played a crucial role in DJ Blaqice’s journey, enabling him to build fruitful relationships with event organizers, fellow DJs, and artists. These connections not only contributed to his success but also became a source of livelihood for his family, embodying the proverb, Umuntu, Umuntu Ngabantu.

He is currently a resident DJ at Zigzag Cafe, one of Spring’s biggest establishments. From playing Commercial House to finding a home in Deep House and Afro House, DJ Blaqice’s musical evolution has been both personal and profound. He emphasizes the importance of authenticity, urging aspiring DJs to love what they do and be prepared for the highs and lows of the industry.

“First things first to be a good DJ takes time meaning you have to love what you doing and play music you enjoy and are comfortable with. You should be always ready to take chances and expect criticism from other DJs. Be ready to give it your all there will be good and bad days,” says Blaqice.
